Dr. Scanlan has been the Executive Director of the AHVMF since 2011. She is past President, past board member, and past Executive Director of the AHVMA. She currently serves as the AHVMA Delegate to the AVMA House of Delegates. Dr. Scanlan also is past president and former board member of the Veterinary Botanical Medical Association (VBMA). She is the founder of the California Holistic Veterinary Medical Association (CHVMA) and a delegate of the CHVMA to the House of Delegates of the California Veterinary Medical Association. She earned her doctorate of veterinary medicine at the University of California, Davis in 1970. In addition, she is certified by IVAS in Acupuncture, holds a MS in Financial Planning, and is currently enrolled in an MS in Integrative Cancer Therapy program at University of Florida Medical School.
Dr. Scanlan began her career as an associate in a mixed animal practice, then bought her own small animal clinic, where she incorporated the use of nutraceuticals in a conventional practice. This was followed by 10 years in Veterinary Technician programs, beginning as an instructor and culminating as the head of the Medical Science division in the former National College in South Dakota. At the end of that time she became certified in acupuncture through IVAS and returned to private practice in southern California, incorporating an increasing number of modalities until she became the holistic member of a 7-veterinarian practice for 16 years until her retirement from active practice. She is the author of Complementary Medicine for Veterinary Technicians and Nurses, and lectures extensively on CAVM.
